Norddeutcher Postbezirk. 1868-1871

Stamps from Norddeutcher Postbezirk were issued after the german war 1866, when all states and Hansestädten in the nothern part of germany united in a north German mail administration. In the following years states like Sachsen, Hessen, Baden, Bayern and Württemberg joined what became Deutches Reich. From January the first 1872 stamps was issued for Germany. Stamps issued from Norddeutcher Postbezirk were used in Schleswig from 1868-1871.
Below are some illustrations of stamps from Norddeutcher Postbezirk. The first stamp illustrated shows a 2 Grs. cancelled in Hadersleben (Danish: Haderslev). This stamp was bought on a web auction in 2008 for 3€.




Deutches Reich 1872-1920

Stamps from Germany issued 1872 to 1920 was used in Schleswig including northen Schleswig, that became a part of Denmark after 1920. Stamps from Deutches Reich can be found cancelled in towns, that had Danish names. Some of the towns do have a Danish as well as a German name.

Below are shown some examples of letters and postcards with German stamps cancelled in Nothern Schleswig. Prices for German stamps with clear cancellation, where the name of the town is easy to read from this area, are considerable more expensive than stamps with a more commen German cancellation. Prices for the most common issues starts at around 1 €. Letters and postcards from the same area and periode are more expensive, but can be found at web auctions from 2-3 €. All 6 illustrations show lots that have been bought on web auctions in 2007 at less than 3 € for each.

After the end of the first world war an international commision was placed in Flensburg with the purpose to decide by a referendum in Schleswig if Schleswig should be a part of Germany or Denmark.
Stamps for use in Schleswig from January 25 until July 17 were issued with values in German coin. The first referendum February 10 decided that the nothern part of Schlewig became a part of Denmark and stamps were issued in Danish coin in May 1920. For a very short periode from July 9 to July 17 it was legal to mix these stamps with stamps from Denmark for postal purposes. The second referendum March 14 decided that the southern part of Schlewig became a part of Germany. Stamps with german coin could be used legaly mixed with stamps from Germany in two short periodes January 25 to January 26 and from June 16 to June 23.
14 values were issued in both German and Danish coin and official stamps were issued for the use of the commision in Flensburg. The official stamps was used from January 26 to June 16.

Official stamps - Schleswig German coin


Same drawing as above but overprinted CIS in a dark blue colour. Specially the high values are rare stamps and only a few copies of 10 mark red are known used for postal purposes. The hole set (14 values) has been sold on auctions in 2007 at prices from close to 1500 €.
